ABOUT ME
I am Susan Maynard. I have been working with children ages 6 weeks-11 year old's for more than 30 years. I received my B. A. in Elementary Education from University of North Carolina-Wilmington. I've been a home daycare provider, childcare worker at military child development centers, a Reading Recovery teacher and an elementary school teacher. I am also a Reading Specialist. I earned my Master's degree in October, 2019. That was a huge personal accomplishment for me.
I've worked in Vista Unified School District for the past 9 years. While working for VUSD I have been an art teacher, a traveling demonstration coach and a classroom teacher. I love working at Lake Elementary! I've taught 2nd grade at Lake and this will be my third year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten has a special place in my heart! 💙
I was raised in Eastern North Carolina and in Wyoming. I've been living in San Diego county since 1996. Except for the 3 years I lived in Okinawa, Japan. Presently, I have 4 children. My oldest graduated from University of California Santa Cruz. My son is studying to become an electrician. My third child, a daughter is working fulltime and starting classes this fall. My step-daughter will be in 11th grade. I enjoy hiking, cooking healthy foods, motorcycle riding and spending time with my wonderful husband and family. I've recently begun to learn how to ride mountain bikes. I am an avid reader. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and belong to the Hufflepuff house. I am interested in plants and birds and animal welfare.
I am passionate about literacy, learning and relationships. I care about teaching students how to be learners, how to grow academically and socio-emotionally. I believe that our classroom is a family community. I expect everyone to be kind, be responsible and be respectful. I believe that for a student to reach their full potential there must be a partnership between the student, the teacher and the student's family. I believe team work and communication help everyone grow and achieve more. I strive to work hard for my students, communicate with staff and families and continue my growth as a learner.
